Box Score BOSTON, Mass. – A near-last minute goal by Clark Jacobson was the difference Wednesday night as the Emerson Men's Soccer Team edged the Newbury Nighthawks 2-1 in a gritty match-up. With the win the Lions are now 1-1-1 on the year while Newbury moves to 1-5 overall.
The first half saw the Lions put up the pressure with 11 shots to Newbury's six while pushing the Nighthawks physically with seven fouls. The Emerson attack proved to be fruitful though as the Lions collected five corner kicks, one which saw a rebound ball bounce out of the box that Ryan Carino demolished into the right corner to give EC the 1-0 lead at the half.
The Nighthawks didn't waste much time battling back into the game though as they saw Milton Ricaurte and Rodriguez Pierre connect on a give-and-go to the mid left of the goal only five minutes in. It got extremely chippy after that as four yellow cards were pulled as both teams gave it everything they had in the half.
Carter Bowers stepped up huge for EC in the half as he put up four saves to keep it knotted at 1-1 while it was nearly neck-in-neck in shots with EC putting up nine and NC putting up eight. The difference came in the tail end of the game though with less than four minutes remaining a cross ball sailed high that found Adam Halliday on the left flank who crossed it again where it found an airborne Clark Jacobson who used his back heel to send it to the back right corner for the 2-1 win.
The Lions return to the home pitch this Saturday as they set to host Maine-Farmington for a 4 p.m. start at Rotch Field in Boston, Mass.
