Box Score BOSTON, Mass. – Melanie Escobar had a phenomenal 12 saves on the day as the Emerson Women's Soccer Team fell in a heartbreaking 2-1 loss in double overtime to the visiting WPI Engineers. The Lions are now 4-6 on the year and 1-2 in conference play as WPI improves to 5-5-2 overall and 2-1-1 in NEWMAC action.
The first half saw the Emerson defense on their heels with WPI firing 10 shots at the Lions but Escobar was amazing with seven saves to keep the Engineers off the board. WPI put up more fouls but collected more corner kicks to no avail as the Lions defense held the line to head into the half still 0-0.
The second half saw WPI's offense come out blazing again but the Lions were the ones to hit the board first as a foul set up a free kick for Natalie Benjamin who cranked a bullet into the bottom left corner that WPI's keeper had no chance at, making it 1-0 EC.
It didn't take long for the Engineers to even the score though as the Emerson defense broke down with a misplay in front of the net as Emily Doherty blasted a shot to the left corner to knot it. The teams couldn't push another one across in regulation as the game rolled into overtime.
The first OT passed uneventfully as only three shots went off in the period, but the Engineers stormed back in the second OT to pepper five shots at the Lions with the defense wearing down again as Emma Turton beat out a defender to deposit one into the left side of the net to end the game.
The Lions return to action this Tuesday as they set to host Regis at 6 p.m. at Rotch Field in Boston, Mass.
