WEYMOUTH, Mass. – In a rematch of the 2012 GNAC Men's Tennis Championship, the Emerson Men's Tennis Team dropped a dominant 9-0 sweep over the Suffolk Rams Saturday. With the win the Lions are now 3-0 on the year and 1-0 in conference play as Suffolk drops to 0-1 overall and 0-1 in GNAC play.
Doubles play saw the Lions come out ready to rock as Kevin Blisniuk and Steven Frend started up the spree with a quick 8-1 win over Aaron Lau and Dachuan Zhu. Vincent Castellini and Zach Connolly followed up next, making quick work of Dan Kelly and German Krohn 8-2. A battle lay ahead in the second position though as Mitchell Lance and Brent Walkoff had a head-to-head with Drew Reilly and Vassili Strganov that saw EC emerge 8-5.
Singles was a similar story as the Lions roared on with Mitchell Lance leading the way with a 6-0, 6-2 trouncing of Drew Reilly in the second position. Brent Walkoff pulled in next with a 6-1, 6-1 win in the four spot before the match was clinched with Vincent Castellini and Niklas Rhodes both dropping 6-1, 6-2 wins in the fifth and sixth spot.
Emerson wasn't done yet though as Steve Frend took down Dachuan Zhu 6-2, 6-1 while the showdown went off in the top spot as Kevin Blisniuk faced Aaron Lau. While Blisniuk did work in the first set winning 6-1, Lau battled back in the second until Blisniuk settled down to finish off the sweep 6-4.
Mitchell Lance was named Emerson's 'Man of the Match' for his efforts in getting the team prepared and playing the best match of the year thus far.
The Lions will continue rolling in their 2013 campaign as they set to travel to Albertus Magnus on Saturday. Match time is set for 1 p.m. in New Haven. Conn.
