Women's Soccer Stopped By Springfield 2-0

Springfield, Mass. - October 19, 2013 - The Springfield College women's soccer team earned its fifth New England and Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) win on Saturday, beating visiting Emerson, 2-0/

Springfield improves to 9-4-1 on the season and 5-1-1 in the NEWMAC while Emerson falls to 6-8-1 overall and 1-4-1 in conference play with the loss.

Springfield got on the board early, scoring in the sixth minute. Jessica Miller (Southbury, Conn.) sent a shot into the left side of the goal for her second strike of the season to give the Pride a 1-0 lead.

The Pride struck again before halftime, when Nicole Fowler (Maynard, Mass.) notched her second goal of the season in the 39th minute. The sophomore dribbled past several defenders and sent a shot above the hands of Emerson goalie Melanie Escobar (Torrington, Conn.) for a 2-0 Pride lead.

Vicky DiNatale (Weymouth, Mass.) played well for the Pride, helping to hold Emerson scoreless. The defender also has five shots in the game, two on goal.

Springfield outshot Emerson by a 19-0 margin. The Pride also led in corner kicks, 14-0.

Lucy Gillett (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) earned the win without making a save for Springfield. Escobar made seven saves in goal for Emerson.

Springfield will continue NEWMAC play on Tuesday, hosting Mount Holyoke at 7:00 p.m. Emerson will travel to Babson on Tuesday for a 3:30 start.
