Men's Soccer Falls Just Shy Against St. Joseph's of Maine

Box Score

STANDISH, Maine – Jon Havens put up his team-leading fourth goal Saturday afternoon in a 2-1 loss to St. Joseph's of Maine. The Lions are now 2-5 on the year and 0-2 in the GNAC while the Monks improve to 4-4-1 overall and 2-2 in conference play.

The first half saw both teams floor it from the start as the Monks came out to put eight shots on the Lions who matched it with seven of their own. Carter Bowers had his work cut out for him as he put up five of his six saves in the half. The Monks moved quickly towards putting their name on the scoreboard first though as only four minutes into the half Teddy Palmer broke away for an unassisted goal to give St. Joe's the lead.

It was a quite 1-0 advantage for the Monks through the rest of the half and into the second until the Lions pushed back with Jon Havens coming through again for EC as Alex Sypsomos set him up with a picture perfect to the back left corner.

It came down to which team would step up first as the Emerson defense finally wore down right towards the tail end of the match as SJM's Zach Johnson fielded a pass from Ross Suleski for a goal that tipped the scale in favor of the Monks.

The Lions continue conference action Tuesday as they travel to Johnson & Wales to face the Wildcats at 4:30 p.m. in Providence, R.I.
