Men's Soccer Unable To Fend Off Second Half Surge In Loss To MIT

Box Score

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – After a grueling first half which saw the Lions down only 1-0 at the break, the Emerson Men's Soccer Team couldn't hold the line through the second as they fell 5-0 to the MIT Engineers Sunday afternoon in Cambridge. On the day, rookie Carter Bowers had six saves in the effort as Emerson opens the 2012 season 0-1.

The first half saw the Lions come out with intensity as the Engineers put some pressure on EC on offense, taking 12 shots through the first 45 minutes of action. Carter Bowers and the defense stepped up to keep MIT at bay nearly for the duration until in the 38th minute of play Nick Diamantoni found himself alone where he deposited the first goal of the game to make it 1-0 headed into the break.

Coming out of the half, the Engineers seemed to step it up a notch as they went full throttle at the Lions defense needing only a few minutes of play before Nick Diamantoni stepped up again, this time with a pass to Sean Bingham who cranked a shot into the top right corner of the net for his second goal of the season.

Bingham would strike again in the 57th minute of play, this time off an Austin Freel pass for a low shot into the corner to make it 3-0. With the Lions changing the defense and adding fresh legs, Emerson was still unable to back the Engineers down as MIT added two more goals to the score in the 58th and 86th minute to close out a 5-0 win.

The Lions will open up their 2012 home slate next as they set to face the Newbury Nighthawks this Thursday, September 6 at 6 p.m. in Boston, Mass. at Rotch Field.
