MILTON, Mass. – A down-to-the-wire goal made the difference Thursday night as the Emerson Women's Lacrosse Team was just unable to usurp the potent Curry Colonels falling in a heartbreaking 8-7 loss. With the loss the Lions move to 5-5 on the year while Curry now holds at 7-5.
The first half saw the Curry Colonels come out to pepper 16 shots at the Lions that Emily Saeger answered the call on yet again as she collected eight saves to keep the Lions nipping at Curry's heels as CC scored first, but Alex Corrado and Kanika Misra had an answer to that with back-to-back goals for a 2-1 EC lead. The Colonels knotted it up again, but Misra lit up the boards again for Emerson to make it 5-3.
Curry started putting on the heat though towards the tail end of the half though as the netted three more goals to jump ahead 5-3 before Sophia Mitropoulos banked one at the end of the half to send the teams into the break with Curry ahead only 5-4.
It would remain close through the rest of the game as well with Curry stepping up first to put two more in before the Lions recouped to see Kayla Dowd put in a free position shot before Mackenzie Johnson made her mark with two unassisted goals to tie it with two minutes left.
With both teams gunning for the finish, it came down to the final seconds of the game where the Lions made some costly mistakes that gave Deanna Monfredo an open lane on the goal to put away the eight and winning goal for the Colonels.
The Lions return to action again this Tuesday as they host Wheelock in a 6 p.m. start in Boston at Rotch Field.
