Box Score BOSTON, Mass. – Even with Chelsea Philips four goals, the Emerson Women's Lacrosse Team was unable to keep pace Thursday night as they fell to the undefeated Gordon College Fighting Scots 17-9 in Boston at Rotch Field. The loss puts EC at 2-1 on the year as Gordon moves to 6-0.
The first half saw the Lions storm back after two goals by the Scots before Chelsea Philips broke out in the eighth minute of play for a free position goal to make it 2-1 in favor of Gordon. After that the boxing match began with Gordon posting another goal which Mackenzie Johnson answered and yet another that Emerson Alex Corrado netted to nip 4-3 at Gordon's heels.
The Fighting Scots took a few more swings in the next five minutes though as they put the finishing touches on four unanswered goals to take an 8-3 lead before Tracie Lombardo decided to throw down back to back goals of her own. Gordon's Stephanie Fitzgerald answered with a last second goal of her own as the teams headed into the half with a 9-5 lead for the Scots.
Emerson took advantage of a Gordon yellow card early on in the half as Chelsea Philips rang the bell again only a minute in to chip at the lead. After another Gordon goal, Philips again answered to make it 10-7 with over 23 minutes remaining.
The Lions seemed to run out of gas in the next 13 minutes of action as the Fighting Scots threw shot after shot at Emily Saeger who collected 15 saves in the game, but the battering was too much as Gordon rattled off seven straight goals on the Lions. EC finished strong though as Alex Corrado and Chelsea Philips went at it again, netting two more before time expired in the 17-9 final.
The Lions will pick back up this Saturday as they set to travel to Rivier to continue GNAC action with a 3 p.m. start time in Nashua, NH.
