Lanza Leads Men's Cross Country at NEWMAC Championships

Lions post ninth place team finish with Lanza 54th overall

ATTLEBORO, Mass. (November 1, 2025) – Emerson College completed a ninth-place team finish at the 2025 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Men's Cross Country Championships, hosted by Wheaton College, on the Mark Coogan Course at Highland Park today.

Senior John Lanza completed the eight-kilometer course in 28:28.3 for a personal best NEWMAC Championship finish of 54th place overall in the field of 111 entries. He ran the first 3.2-kilometers in 10:58.1 to stand 53rd at the interval, before sitting 54th after 5.7K in 19:44.9. Lanza led Emerson's ninth place team finish as the Lions compiled 252 points.

No. 11 MIT captured its 27th-straight NEWMAC Championship with 20 points as the Engineers swept the top three spots in the running order, placing all five scoring runners in the top eight and accounting for seven of the top ten runners in the field in the dominant team win. Senior Tim Neumann led the MIT top three sweep by taking the individual NEWMAC title in 25:07.9, followed by junior teammate Yichen Sun (25:11.8) and sophomore Renne Cooper (25:13.4). Worcester Polytechnic Institute finished second in the team standings with 60 points with Babson College third with 83.

Coach's Corner:
"The NEWMAC Championship races are tough since gaps tend to form fairly easily," said Emerson head coach Brandon Fox. "Today was especially challenging considering that it was a multi-loop course going straight into a headwind. The front runners set a tactical race for those aiming for All-Conference. The front end of our men's team is typically in the middle of the pack, and so the "race" that they are running is more of a mental one. Our guys are fighting for a PR or doing well against the teams that we can compete with. To that end, I think our squad ran tough, and that they will reap the reward in two weeks at regionals."
