Women's Tennis Splits Doubleheader

The Emerson Women's Tennis Team split a doubleheader on Saturday against the Curry College Colonels and Nichols Bison, defeating the Colonels 9-0 and falling 9-0 to the Bison.

Match One: Emerson 9, Curry 0

In their first match, the Lions came out strong.  Emerson swept the doubles matches, with Eliana Flores-Barber (Long Beach, Calif.) and Annie Woodbury (Salinas, Calif.) defeated Sophia Wiernusz and Alison Daigle 8-0.  Thea Nagle (Mechanicsburg, Penn.) and Sophie Oglensky (West Long Beach, CAlif.) defeated Natalie Valvo and Kelsie Merrill 8-5 in the second doubles matchups 8-5.  Cassia Burns (Tewksbury, Mass.) and Angelica Ao (Chongqing, China.) defeated Samantha Gilbert and Kayla Connors 8-2.

In the singles, the Lions continued their strong play.  Flores-Barber defeated Wiernusz 6-0 in both sets.  Woodbury won the second singles match due to retirement.  Nagle defeated Valvo 6-0, 6-1 in the third singles match.  Burns played the fourth match, defeated Merrill in a hard fought win 7-6, 6-4.  Oglensky defeated Gilbert 6-1 in both sets of the fifth matchup while Ao defeated Connors 6-4 in both sets of her match.

Match Two:  Nichols 9, Emerson 0

In the second match, Emerson opened up doubles with Flores-Barber and Woodbury losing to Amaria Settiwongse and Isabelle Leonardi 8-4. Megan Nathanson and Rachel McDonald defeated Nagle and Oglensky 8-0 while Burns and Ao fell to Kara Stankewitz and Lindsey Kaplan fell by the same score.

The singles matches saw the Lions unable to mount a comeback.  Flores-Barber fell to Settingwongse while Woodbury fell to Stankewitz in the first two matches.  Burns, Ao, and Nagle all fell 6-0, 6-0 in their matches, matches Oglensky fell 6-0, 6-2.

The Lions close out their fall with a record of 3-2.  The team will get back in action at the beginning of March.
