Men's Soccer Shoulders Setback To Clark

The Lead: The Emerson men's soccer team shouldered a 3-0 setback at the hands of Clark in its first NEWMAC contest of the season on Friday night. 

 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 

  • Freshman RJ Dziejma (Flanders, N.J.) had a team-best four shots followed by junior Gavin Faucette (Oakland, Calif.) who had three shots including one on goal. 
  • Emerson sophomore keeper David Kemp (London, England) and freshman Robbie Shinder (Boca Raton, Fla.) split time in goal with Kemp starting the opening frame with one save on seven shots and Shinder finishing out the game with six stops. 
  • Trevor Sheridan, Jonathan Guilherme and Sean Munroe all registered goals for Clark with Munroe also picking up an assist. 
  • Clark keeper Melvin Vincent earned the win and came away with three saves. 
  • The Cougars held the shot advantage over the Lions (20-9) as well as in corner kicks (4-3). 

 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • On a long ball over the top to Sheridan, who was making a run on net, was able to chest the ball down and poked it past a charging Kemp in the sixth minute to give Clark an early 1-0 edge.
  • Clark extended its lead to 2-0 within the 23rd minute when Munroe rifled a shot that forced Kemp into a save only to have the rebound bounce back and tucked away by Guilherme.
  • Emerson gained a scoring chance with two minutes remaining in the opening half as freshman Arturo Ruiz (Morristown, N.J.) carried a crossed pass from Faucette up the middle with defenders on his tail, but the ball landed right into Vincent's hands to hold the score at 2-0.
  • The Cougars outshot the Lions, 9-5, in the first half. 
  • The visitors opened the second half with its third goal in the 54th minute off a long throw in that was headed in by Munroe. 

 

UP NEXT 

  • Emerson steps out of conference play on Monday, September 17 for a 7:00 p.m. meeting at Newbury College. 
  • Clark also plays out of conference come Tuesday, September 18 over at 7:00 p.m.
