BOSTON, Mass. (October 28, 2026) – Emerson College struck for an early goal and made it stand for over 87-minutes to keep its postseason hopes alive with a 1-0 victory over Worcester Polytechnic Institute in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's soccer matchup at Rotch Field tonight.

Junior Jack Wasserman scored less than three minutes into the match and sophomore Asa Roberts and the defensive backline did the rest to preserve the shutout win for Emerson. Roberts made two second half saves in posting his first shutout of the season (fourth career). He was supported by the Lions defensive backline of seniors Daniel Bede and Ethan Minster, Wasserman and first year Cade Lagerwey that limited WPI to just four shots – two on target.

Junior Savio Ketnouvong made one save in goal for WPI.

Wasserman's first career goal came just 2:49 into the match when he headed in a short cross from the right by sophomore Carlo Carson at the far post on Emerson's second opportunity after WPI was unable to clear a corner kick. Roberts preserved the win with two second half saves, both in the closing minutes, including a late stop on a one-on-one attempt in the left channel with two and a half minutes to play.

Emerson's path to a spot in next week's NEWMAC Tournament will require at least a point, but most likely a win at MIT in its regular season finale on Saturday. The Lions (1-3-3) have six points and now trail Springfield College (2-4-1) and Clark University (1-3-4) by a single point heading into the regular season final for the sixth and final spot in the tournament. Clark is idle on the final weekend of the season, while Springfield visits Wheaton. WPI (2-3-2) is two points in front of Emerson with a match to play at Salve Regina University on Saturday.

Emerson (8-5-4, 1-3-3 NEWMAC) wraps up the regular season at MIT on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. WPI (2-8-5, 2-3-2 NEWMAC) visits Salve Regina on Saturday at 6 p.m.
