The Lead: Despite a double-double showing of 29 assists and 12 digs by senior Moira Brennan (Glenview, Ill.), the Emerson women's volleyball saw its 2018 come to a close with a 3-1 setback to Springfield in NEWMAC volleyball action on Saturday afternoon.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Sophomore Grace Tepper (Kensington, Md.) totaled a Lions best 10 kills, while Brennan handed out 29 assists.
- More Lions leaders included freshman Lauren Quan (San Diego, Calif.) produced 16 digs and senior Fara Cohen (Morristown, N.J.), who registered three aces from the line.
- Jen Donnelly led Springfield with a match-high 19 kills at a .366 clip to match 15 digs with Katie vonKampen following with a match high five blocks and 18 kills.
- Sara Labadorf racked up 50 assists as Briana Tovar wrapped the Pride leaders with 17 digs and three aces.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Emerson were in an early 4-1 deficit to start off the first set and were able to respond with a 7-1 spark to claim an 8-5 cushion over Springfield.
- Following a Pride timeout, Emerson surrendered its lead and allowed the hosts to answer with a 6-1 run to put themselves in front at 19-15.
- The Lions tacked on four consecutive points to snag back the lead only to have the Pride regain the one point 23-22 edge on a kill by vonKampen.
- A block and ace coming off a timeout were the first two of three the Lions converted before taking the 27-25 set victory as senior Kelley Guerra (Randolph, N.J.) sent down the game winning kill.
- Springfield hit a blistering .474 clip to cruise to a 25-9 second set win over Emerson after the hosts quickly put the Lions in a 6-0 hole to begin the frame.
- Emerson found themselves on top 13-9 in the third before Springfield poured on four straight points to knot the score 13-all.
- A Pride serving error allowed the Lions to push back in front (16-15), but could not hold the hosts as they rattled off a 10-2 spark to pull away with the 25-18 win.
- To begin the fourth frame, the Lions once again played catch up as the Pride opened up a 7-2 lead on a swing by Demi Spanos before answering back to inch with 15-14 on an ace.
- Tovar and Ashley served up aces within a 9-3 Springfield run deep into the frame to earn match point, but Emerson did not go away quietly and tacked on five final points before Donnelly's kill sealed Springfield's 25-22 win.
