The Lead: Junior Natalie Busch (Weybridge, England) cashed in a career-best 26 points with the help of double-figure efforts from three more Lions as the Emerson women's basketball team picked up an 88-76 road triumph over the Wheaton (Mass.) Lyons on Wednesday night in NEWMAC women's basketball action.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Busch anchored the Lions and all scorers with 26 points on 9-of-16 shots, including a 5-for-7 effort from the three-point line and went 3-for-4 on the charity stripe to go along with four rebounds, three assists and four steals.
- Freshman Sam Boyle (Scotts Valley, Calif.) added 13 points, five boards, one assist and two blocks, while both junior Charlie Boyle (Scotts Valley, Calif.) and sophomore Natalie Clydesdale (Pittsburgh, Penn.) each put up 12 points.
- C. Boyle led the Lions on the glass with seven boards, while senior Maya Savino (Killingworth, Conn.) was credited with a team-best six assists and three blocks.
- Both Mikayla Pucci and Natalie Wind each canned 18 points for Wheaton (Mass.) on a combined 12-of-24 effort from the floor as Rebecca Olivieri added 14 of her own.
- Pucci also grabbed a team high nine rebounds and two blocks, while Olivieri had four assists and Ruthie Zientek blocked a pair of shots.
- Emerson finished shooting 47.4% (36-76) in the win with a three-point percentage of 40.0% on the perimeter (10-25) with a 42.9% rate on the free throw line (6-14).
- Wheaton (Mass.) went 27-of-61 (44.3%) from the field to go along with converting 7-of-19 shots from beyond the arc (36.8%) and 15-of-17 on the free throw line (88.2%).
- The Lyons beat the Lions on the glass (44-38) and in assists (18-17), while the Lions put up 36 points in the paint to the Lyons' 34.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Emerson grabbed the lead from the get go and took a commanding 27-16 lead after the conclusion of the first quarter.
- The Lions maintained a steady lead over the hosts that carried on into the second frame, but the Lyons were able to close within 14 at the quarter's end as the score stood at 45-31 going into the half.
- Emerson never let up the lead going into the second half as the visitors outscored Wheaton (Mass.) by a point, 23-22, and entered the final stanza with a 68-53 advantage.
- Despite being outscored 23-20 in the fourth, Emerson held on and snagged the 88-76 win.
