The Lead: The Emerson women's basketball team found themselves on the end of an 80-50 setback at the hands of the Springfield Pride in NEWMAC play on Saturday afternoon in women's basketball conference action at Western New England's Alumni Healthful Living Center.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Sophomore Kate Foultz (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) led Emerson with eight points off the bench, while freshman Ashley Toner (Barnegat, N.J.) contributed seven points.
- Junior Charlie Boyle (Scotts Valley, Calif.) and sophomore Quinn Madden (Mokena, Ill.) each grabbed five rebounds.
- Credited with two assists each were sophomore Natalie Clydesdale (Pittsburgh, Penn.), senior Maya Savino (Killingworth, Conn.) and Madden.
- Leading Springfield was Emily Jacques, who put up 17 points to go along with seven rebounds, six blocks and three steals.
- Alex Goslin also contributed 17 points and added three assists, three steals and three rebounds, while Gracie Restituyo rounded out the stat leaders with a double double of 15 points and 13 boards.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Springfield jumped out to an early 9-2 lead through the first 3:17 before a triple from Foultz pulled the Lions back to within four (9-5) with 6:34 on the clock in the first.
- Emerson found themselves down seven (12-5) at 6:17, yet they were able to pull even at 12-all thanks to a 7-0 spurt that was capped off by another three from Foultz.
- Backed by a pair of free throws from Goslin, the hosts held a seven point to close out the first until Boyle knocked in a pair and made the score 19-14.
- Just 2:27 into the second frame, Restituyo put in a lay up to give the Pride a 10-point cushion (24-14) before she canned a free throw to make it 27-16 with 4:16 in the half.
- The Lions would back to within seven, but it was the Pride who wrapped the half on a 6-0 streak with the score in the host's favor at 33-20.
- Emerson could not slow down Springfield as the Pride embarked on a lengthy 17-0 run to start off the second half with 30 points separating the two teams (50-20) at 6:25.
- A layup from Restituyo with 10 ticks on the clock gave Springfield the 60-34 cushion to wrap the third quarter.
- Jacques drained back-to-back jumpers to begin the fourth with the Lions now looking at a 27-point deficit (65-38) before she put in two more baskets late in the frame to make it 71-44.
- Within the final minutes of the contest, Maddy Fay converted a free throw and lay up to seal Emerson's 80-50 setback.
