The Lead: In the sixth playing of the Charles River Cup, the Emerson women's soccer team and Lesley Lynx each notched second-half nets as the game wrapped at a 1-1 double overtime draw on Tuesday night under the lights in non-conference women's soccer action. The Lions notched a goal from sophomore Veronica Alberts (Half Moon Bay, Calif.) in the 54th minute, while Samantha Bessey tallied the equalizer for Lesley at the 78th-minute mark. The draw allows the Lions to keep the Charles River Cup, claiming the title for the third consecutive year.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Emerson was outshot by Lesley, 10-9, as the Lynx also held the 5-3 corner kick edge.
  • The Lions were on the end of six infractions to the Lynx's 10.
  • Alberts goal within the 57th minute was her first net of the season with junior Elizabeth Noble (Long Beach, Calif.) credited on the assist.
  • In the net for Emerson was senior keeper Laura Gartelman (Hamburg, N.Y.), who allowed one goal and came away with three saves on four shot attempts.
  • Bessey notched Lesley's lone goal while Jordan Mitchell was credited with the assist.
  • On Lesley's end, Brittley Gaan was in between the pipes for the Lynx and made two saves while allowing one goal on three shots.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Both Emerson and Lesley sent up five shots apiece during the first 45 minutes, but none of those shots made their way into the net as the teams entered halftime in a 0-0 knot.
  • It was in the 54th minute of the second half that Emerson was finally able to put the ball past Gaan and gave themselves the 1-0 lead.
  • On a feed from Noble in the backfield, Alberts fended off defenders going up the left wing and flicked her first net of the season right into the lower right corner past Gaans.
  • Emerson was able to hold its tight 1-0 lead over the next 24 minutes until Lesley joined in on the scoring mix and put the tying net into the net.
  • Mitchell fed the ball to Beesey inside the left post and snuck the equalizer into the upper left corner over the fingertips of Gartelman in the 78th minute.
  • Neither team was able to push themselves ahead through the remaining minutes of regulation as the game entered the first overtime period.
  • Within the first overtime, no shots were registered on either side and sent the game into its second overtime stanza.
  • Emerson held the 2-1 shot advantage through the second overtime, both of which nearly lifted the Lions to a win, including a breakaway by junior Jess Frost (Palos Verdes, Calif.) that was broken up by Gaans.
  • After a shot by Bessey in the 105th minute sailed wide right, Lesley committed what could have been a costly foul with just 39 ticks left to play.
  • Freshman Sophia Detweiler (West Chester, Pa.) sent up her free kick with the clock winding down, but had her shot ding the crossbar to hold the final at 1-1.

UP NEXT

  • Emerson gets back onto the field on Tuesday, October 3 after a short break and welcomes Smith for a 6:00 p.m. contest.
  • Lesley heads back home on Thursday, September 28 to host Rhode Island College in a non-conference contest slated for an 8:00 p.m. start.
