The Lead: The Emerson softball team suffered a setback on both ends of their NEWMAC twin bill on Friday afternoon against the visiting MIT Engineers. Emerson dropped game one by the score of 8-2 before MIT handed the Lions a 6-1 loss in the nightcap.
Game One: MIT 8, Emerson 2
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Emerson plated two runs in the home half of the third inning to claim the 2-0 lead over MIT.
- After sophomore Kallista Leonardos (El Granada, Calif.) drove in the first Lions run on a sacrifice fly, junior Jacqueline DeFusco (East Greenwich, R.I.) crossed home the second run thanks to an error by the catcher.
- Through each of the remaining four innings, MIT tallied a run, including a five-run fifth inning, to push themselves ahead by six at 8-2.
- Zoe Hinton batted a two-bagger to drive in the first MIT run in the fourth to cut the score down to 2-1.
- The Engineers pieced together a five-run fifth inning that was highlighted by Jasmin Joseph's two-run double to extend their lead to 6-2.
- Michelle Wist crushed an RBI double into the outfield to pull MIT ahead to a 7-2 lead over Emerson within the sixth before Devon Goetz plated the final Engineers run on a mishap by the catcher in the seventh.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Four Lions recorded a hit while DeFusco finished 2-for-4 at the plate with a pair of singles and a run scored and Leonardos went 1-for-2 with a single and RBI.
- Marquez tossed the first 4.1 innings in the loss and allowed six runs to cross on eight hits with one strikeout and a walk.
- Cash tossed the final 2.2 innings where she surrendered a pair of runs (one earned) on six hits with a strikeout and three walks.
- Hinton went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate for MIT with a single and a pair of doubles to match one run scored and one RBI.
- Goetz, Wist and Joseph all tallied a pair of hits, while both Joseph and Wist drove in a pair of runs.
- Nasser was credited with the win and allowed a pair of runs (one earned) on six hits with a trio of walks and eight strikeouts through a seven-inning outing.
Game Two: MIT 6, Emerson 1
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Over the course of the third and fifth frames, MIT crossed all six of its runs to give themselves a five-run lead over Emerson at 6-1.
- To start off the third inning, Joseph doubled in the first MIT to give the Engineers the 1-0 lead.
- MIT got to Cash for four runs within the fourth that started off with a two-run double by Madi Pickett and ended with a two-run homer from the bat of Goetz.
- Within Emerson's half of the fourth, Cash helped herself out as she belted her first home run of the season to put the Lions within four at 5-1.
- The Engineers batted in their sixth and final run in the top of the fifth thanks to an RBI double by Wist.
- Emerson had a chance to cut down MIT's margin with a pair of runners on first and second and two outs in their half of the fifth, but a pop up to second concluded the inning.
- VanHemel retired Emerson in order on a pair of fly outs and a strikeout to wrap up the seventh.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Four Lions notched hits for Emerson as Cash led at the plate going 1-for-3 with a home run, RBI and a run scored.
- Through four innings on the mound, Cash surrendered five runs on four hits and gave up a walk while she fanned three batters.
- Marquez wrapped up the final three frames and gave up a single run on one hit to match a pair of strikeouts and walks.
- Pickett and Goetz finished a combined 2-for-5 at the plate with three runs scored, double, home run and drove in four of MIT's six runs.
- Starting on the mound for MIT was VanHemel, who improved to 4-0 in her seven inning effort where she allowed a single run to cross on four hits, three strikeouts and a walk.
