The Lead: On Saturday afternoon at Brown & Plofker Gym, sophomore Charlie Boyle (Scotts Valley, Calif.) drained a team-leading 13 points and seven rebounds for the Lions as the Emerson College women's basketball team dropped its first home contest in a 64-55 loss to Wellesley in NEWMAC action.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Boyle finished going 5-for-15 from the field with a team-leading 13 points, seven boards and one steal, while junior Eastin Ashby (Pittston, Penn.) followed with 12 points, four assists, one block and a team-high six steals. Freshman Kate Foultz (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) went 4-for-10 from the field and chipped in 10 points off the bench.
- Ailis Hanley paced Wellesley and finished going 8-for-16 from the field, drained 17 points, three assists, one block and had nine boards. Caitlin Aguirre had a team-high six steals.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Wellesley tallied nine points through the first three minutes to take 9-2 lead over Emerson before the Lions put up eight consecutive points to square the score at 9-all on a trey from Boyle with 3:38 left to play in the first.
- Foultz drained a three to up Emerson's lead to five at 16-11 before Wellesley put up four more points to cut the deficit to two (16-14).
- Freshman Quinn Madden (Mokena, Ill.) closed out the first quarter with a jumper to give Emerson the 18-14 edge going into the second.
- After Wellesley grabbed the 19-18 lead, its first since 7:20 of the first, Emerson embarked on an 8-0 streak that was capped off by a layup by Foultz and gave the Lions the 28-23 advantage at the half.
- The Lions went up six at the 8:09 mark of the third quarter after back-to-back three-point buckets by junior Maya Savino (Killingworth, Conn.) and senior Elizabeth Horan (Ashland, Mass.).
- Emily Kopp's layup with 4:15 left in the third put Wellesley back in the game and evened the score 34-all. Through the remainder of the quarter, the score differential never went above two as Wellesley battled and closed out the third with the one point 45-44 lead.
- Emerson found themselves playing from behind in the fourth as Wellesley gained a seven-point advantage at 56-49, but cut the deficit down to two on a three by sophomore Natalie Busch (Weybridge, England) at 56-54 at the 4:36 mark.
- Ashby tallied Emerson's final point at 2:38 with Wellesley cashing in four consecutive points from the charity stripe to close out the 64-55 win for the Blue.
