The Lead: Though junior Maya Savino (Killingworth, Conn.) and senior Elizabeth Horan (Ashland, Mass.) each put up double-figures in points, the Emerson women's basketball were edged out by Springfield, 71-64, in NEWMAC action at Blake Arena on Saturday morning. 

 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 

  • Savino posted a team-high 12 points for Emerson, while Horan followed with 11 points and added six rebounds. 
  • Junior Sierra Ducey (Poway, Calif.) put up a team-high 10 boards and two blocks with seven points, while junior Eastin Ashby (Pittston, Penn.) led with four assists. 
  • Host Springfield was led by Ava Adamopoulos and Lexi Windwer - Adamopoulos led the Pride in both scoring (22 points) and rebounds (12), while Windwer chipped in 18 points with seven rebounds, four assists and three steals.
  • Alex Goslin had a team-high eight assists and Heather King added 11 points to match five rebounds and one steal. 
  • Emerson was 24-of-63 (38.1%) from the field, along with 7-of-28 (25.0%) from beyond the arc and outshot Springfield on the free throw line and canned 6-of-12 (50.0%).
  • Springfield shot 30-of-68 (44.1%) on the floor, canned 5-of-11 three-point shots (45.5%) and went 9-of-19 from the charity stripe (47.4%). 

 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • In the first quarter, Emerson took the game's first lead at 7-4 that was capped off by a three from Horan and trey by Ducey just 2:36 into the contest. 
  • The visitors then stretched its lead to six after a layup by Ashby halfway through the first.
  • The Lions held the nine-point advantage until the later minutes of the first before the Pride pieced together five consecutive points to get within four to close out the quarter.
  • After Springfield cut Emerson's nine-point lead down to four, it took the hosts a mere 1:19 to square the score at 21-all on a shot from downtown by Chelsea McAllister. 
  • The Lions and Pride exchanged the lead until a jumper by King with 3:49 left in the second quarter propelled Springfield on an 8-2 run. 
  • A buzzer-beating three by Windwer closed the book on the first half and sent Springfield to the locker room with a 42-34 lead. 
  • Springfield jumped out to a 10-0 streak to open the third quarter and extended its lead to 13 that included a pair of three's from Windwer to put the score at 53-40 with 5:15 on the clock.
  • Windwer canned yet another three from downtown to extend the Pride's lead to 17. 
  • Emerson found themselves down 65-46 just 2:01 into the final stanza and began to surge - the Lions made it a 10-point game after a three from freshman Leena Kardacz (Harleysville, Penn.) with 1:37 left to play.
  • The Lions' comeback was cut short as Adamopoulos' converted a three-point bucket to hand Emerson the 74-61 loss. 

 

UP NEXT 

  • Emerson comes back home to Boston for a 7:00 p.m. matchup against and will host MIT in NEWMAC tilt on Wednesday, January 18.
  • Springfield also returns to action on Wednesday, January 18 and will travel to WPI for 7:00 p.m. contest.
