The Lead: On Thursday afternoon at Staake Gymnasium, the Emerson women's basketball team saw sophomore Charlie Boyle (Scotts Valley, Calif.) drop a season-high 22 points in the Lions 80-65 setback against the Babson Beavers in NEWMAC action.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Boyle drained a season-high 22 points for the Lions with four rebounds and finished 10-for-12 from the floor.
- Junior Sierra Ducey (Poway, Calif.) put up 11 points to match a team-high two steals, seven boards ad seven assists.
- Sophomore Natalie Busch (Weybridge, England) tallied 10 points off the bench for Emerson.
- For host Babson, senior Giovanna Pickering registered 26 points, three assists and four steals and finished 10-for-15 from the field.
- Senior Jennifer Narlee followed up with an overall game-high 15 boards and six steals.
- Emerson shot 45.8% (27-for-59) from the floor, went 3-for-15 in three-point attempts (20%) and made 11-of-16 (68.8%) shots from the charity stripe.
- Babson finished 31-for-67 (46.3%) from the field and shot 42.9% beyond the arc and found success on the free throw line (12-for-15, 80%).
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Babson held the four-point edge over Emerson before the Lions answered with four straight points to square the score at 8-all just five minutes into the first quarter.
- The Lions and Beavers exchanged the lead three times throughout the middle of the quarter until the hosts pieced together an 8-0 streak to up their lead to 18-14 with 20 seconds left to play.
- Freshman Natalie Clydesdale (Pittsburgh, Penn.) canned a jumper with a mere three seconds on the clock to get Emerson within a pair as the quarter closed with the score at 18-16.
- The Beavers opened the second quarter on a 7-0 tear to give Babson a seven-point advantage over Emerson (25-18) just four minutes in.
- Emerson outscored Babson 7-4 through the final 5:09 of the second after Ducey tallied a trey to bring the Lions within four (29-25) at the half.
- The closest Emerson would come to Babson within the third was two at 42-40 before the Beavers offense erupted and pushed its lead to 12 on an 11-1 streak that was capped off by a three from Jaqueline Jozefick.
- The Lions put up three points to close out the third down by 10 at 55-45.
- Through the first 7:47 of the final stanza, Babson nailed its first shots to give themselves a comfortable 17-point lead at 62-45.
- The Beavers maintained a double-digit lead over the Lions over the next 6:30, but the Lions battled and cut the deficit to nine with 1:10 remaining (75-66).
- Nine is the closest Emerson would come to Babson for the Beavers canned five more points to take the 80-68 victory.
