Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - On Saturday afternoon, the Emerson women's volleyball team was outlasted in a three-set sweep (25-18, 25-14, 26-24) by Springfield on in NEWMAC action.
Emerson drops to 10-5 overall and 1-3 versus NEWMAC opponents, while Springfield moves up to 10-3 overall and 4-1 in NEWMAC play.
The Lions gained the early lead over Springfield and held the 5-4 edge util two service errors and kills from Haley Kmetz and Jamie Schneck allowed the Pride to pull ahead at 9-8. After the Pride gained the 9-8 lead, they started to pull away from the Lions and went up 16-12 on an 8-4 streak. Emerson then managed to pull within one at 17-16 thanks to a 4-1 run that consisted of two kills from senior Jules Augustine (Skaneateles, N.Y.). With Emerson down one, Springfield went back by six at 23-17 and went on to take the 25-18 opening frame win on an ace and kill from Lauren Holt.
Hitting .-027 caused Emerson to drop the second set by a score of 25-14 and find themselves down two sets. Springfield went up 5-0 before Emerson got on the board due to a service error committed by the Pride. The Pride put two more points up to take the 7-1 lead before a kill from sophomore Fara Cohen (Morristown, N.J.) and two Pride attack errors got the Lions within three at 7-4. Springfield answered Emerson's mini surge with a 4-0 run of their own and gave themselves a seven point cushion at 11-4, but Emerson battled back with four straight points and were back within three 11-8 after a kill from freshman Bella Edwards (Palisades, Calif.). The Lions went on to tack on six more points to get within four at 18-14 before the Pride banged out seven points to close out the second set with two aces.
Despite a match-high .333 kill percentage, a late comeback by the Lions was cut short as the Pride barely squeaked out the 26-24 win in the closing frame. Springfield pulled ahead 6-2 before Emerson started to get back into the game after two Augustine kills squared the set at 6-all. After the Pride let the Lions creep back, the Pride managed to hold its lead for the remainder of the match despite a few threats from the Lions. Springfield gained a match-high 10 point cushion at 22-12 and were ready to put away Emerson, but the Lions had other plans. Emerson powered out 12 points that consisted of a trio of kills from Augustine and freshman Lily Marella (Portland, Ore.). Marella registered a kill to put Emerson within one at 24-23 that was followed up by a bad set from Springfield to even the score 24-all. With the teams now locked in a 24-24 tie, a kill from Jennifer Donnelly and an ace closed the books on Emerson as the Pride came away with the 26-24 win.
Junior Sam Harton (Cartersville, Ga.) tallied a team-high 15 digs with sophomore Moira Brennan (Glenview, Ill.) recording 22 helpers for the Lions. Augustine led the way with eight kills and two blocks, while Edwards recorded four kills, an ace and nine digs. Cohen had an ace, three digs and a block and Marella had seven kills and a block.
Anagabrielle Sanchez had a team-high 15 digs for the Pride with Donnelly recording nine kills and one block. Kmetz tallied nine kills as well and Marnae Mawdsley had 22 helpers. Jennifer Hurwitz and Hannah Lozano each recorded three aces as Holt had five blocks.
Both Emerson and Springfield continue NEWMAC action on Tuesday night. Emerson returns to Brown & Plofker Gym to host NEWMAC foe Smith at 7:00 p.m., while Springfield heads to Wheaton (Mass.) at 7:00 p.m.
