Box Score BOSTON, Mass. - Sophomore Jess Frost (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.) and freshman Chiara Bernardi (Santa Barbara, Calif.) netted a combined seven of the Emerson women's soccer team's nine goals as the Lions bested host Newbury College 9-0 in a season opening triumph on Thursday night at The Windsor School. Senior Mindy Labayen (El Segundo, Calif.) and sophomore Elizabeth Noble (Long Beach, Calif.) also tallied goals in the win.
Emerson begins the 2016 campaign at 1-0, while Newbury drops to 0-1.
Three goals from the foot of Frost helped push the Lions to a 3-0 advantage after 28 minutes of first half play. Within the first 12 minutes, Frost slipped two unassisted goals past the reach of Newbury goalie Faith Cordes. At the 28:34 mark, sophomore Kira Venturini (Wallingford, Conn.) and Noble connected with an open Frost as she put the score at 3-0.
Two more goals from Labayen and Bernardi powered the Lions to a commanding 5-0 cushion over Newbury at halftime. At the conclusion of the first half, Emerson took 19 shots on goal while Newbury was held to just one.
Emerson entered halftime with a 5-0 lead and pulled even further away from Newbury in the second half.
Bernardi's second goal of the game gave Emerson the 6-0 second half lead (58:34) and was followed up three minutes later by Noble as she buried the Lions' seventh goal (61:09) past Newbury's new goalie, Noelle Sass. With the help of Noble, Bernardi registered a hat trick that gave Emerson an eight goal lead (69:55). Frost's fourth marker of the game put away Newbury in a 9-0 victory for the Lions.
The Lions held the advantage in both shots (34-8) and corner kicks (11-2).
Frost and Bernardi paced the Purple & Yellow with a combined seven goals and seven shots on goal, while freshman Veronica Alberts (Half Moon Bay, Calif.), Venturini and Noble registered two assists apiece and sophomore Paige Haley (San Diego, Calif.) and freshman Andrea Carvajal (Leominster, Mass.) recorded one assist each.
Senior Melanie Escobar (Torrington, Conn.) and Hannah Hodge (Gainesville, Georgia) split time in the net. Escobar earned the win with one save in the first half, while Hodge recorded seven saves in the second 45 minutes.
Shannon Walsh had three shots on goal for the host Nighthawks, while Jennifer McDonald followed with two shots on goal. Cordes and Sass split time in the goal as Cordes took the loss and saved four shots and allowed five goals, while Sass saved four shots allowed four goals.
Emerson returns to the field on Saturday, Sept. 3 with their home opener against Gordon at 2:00 p.m. Newbury continues their home schedule as they welcome Clark on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m.
