Women's Tennis Puts Up Strong Fight Against Nationally Ranked Wellesley

The Emerson women's tennis team fell 8-1 to nationally ranked Wellesley College Tuesday evening in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action.

The match started with Wellesley jumping off to a 3-0 start after sweeping doubles play.  At #1 doubles for Emerson the freshman pair of Alisha Parikh and Sabrina Jacobs fell 8-2 to reigning NEWMAC doubles team of the week Andjela Stojkovic and Sarah Yan.  Rachel Scalera and Jamie CoConis fell to their opponents Rosanne Hu and Selina Peng 8-1 at #2 doubles and Tiziana Vazquez and Alex Weingarten fell 8-3 at #3 doubles.

The highlight of the day for Emerson came at the #2 singles spot as freshman Alisha Parikh came away with a 6-4, 1-6, 10-8 win over Wellesley's Selina Peng.  Coach Munsey had the following to say about the match.  "Alisha has been playing her best tennis of the season over the past couple of weeks and it was great to see her rewarded with a win over such a talented team and opponent.  I was really proud of the way she competed."

At the #1 singles position, Emerson freshman Sabrina Jacobs played a very strong match but ultimately fell to Wellesley's Andjela Stojkovic.  Jacobs dropped the first 6-2 but made a comeback in the 2nd set and played some great tennis to take a 4-3 lead.  Stojkovic responded and took the next 3 games giving her the 6-2-6-4 win.  Wellesley picked up wins at the other 4 singles positions giving them the overall 8-1 victory.

Coach Munsey had the following to say about the match.  "I thought our women did a great job of stepping up and competing against a nationally ranked program that I have a tremendous amount of respect for.  I thought our energy and effort was excellent and it was great to see Alisha come away with a win.  We have really come together as a team since the start of the season and I'm really looking forward to seeing what we can do during our last 3 matches of the fall."

Emerson returns to action on Friday, October 7th as they take on Bridgewater state for a 3:30 home match that will be played at the Winchester Indoor Lawn and Tennis Center.
