Box Score NEWTON, Mass. - Sophomore Fara Cohen (Morristown, N.J.) registered a team-high 14 digs and senior Jules Augustine (Skaneateles, N.Y.) notched 13 kills to lead the Emerson women's volleyball team to a 3-1 non-conference win over Lasell College on Thursday night. Emerson took the first two sets by scores of 27-25 and 25-21 as Lasell took the third set at 25-15, but the Lions powered out a 25-13 fourth set win.
The win halted Emerson's two match skid as the Lions improved to 14-7 overall, while the loss for Lasell slipped them down to 6-15.
Cohen led the Lions with 14 digs and Augustine powered out 13 kills on 27 swings along with one ace. Sophomore Moira Brennan (Glenview, Ill.) had 29 helpers, an ace and 10 digs. Freshman Bella Edwards (Palisades, Calif.), junior Sam Harton (Cartersville, Ga.), senior Amanda Linzmeyer (Huntington Beach. Calif.), sophomore Kelley Guerra (Randolph, N.J.) and senior Jessica Hamilton (Los Angeles, Calif.) each registered nine digs. Junior Halley Dewey (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) led the Lions defense with five blocks.
Sophomore Olivia Addington (Orange, Calif.) led Lasell with a team-high 22 kills, along with 12 digs and two aces, Junior Taylor Tiezzi (Meriden, Conn.) recorded a match-high 38 helpers and 11 digs, while classmate Caitlyn Garcia (Moreno Valley, Calif.) led the Lasers with 26 digs. Freshman Amanda Dilenardo (West Haven, Conn.) and sophomore Cassidy Murray (Red Hook, N.Y.) each recorded one block.
Lasell held onto the lead to begin the opening set until Emerson clawed their way back to tie the set at 14-all and went on to gain the 18-17 lead on a kill by Guerra. The Lasers battled and stayed right on the Lions tails and never fell behind more than one point. Some breathing room for Emerson came after they gained the 24-21 lead, but Lasell evened the set at 24-all on three consecutive points. The Lions squeaked out the first set win on two final attack errors by the Lasers.
Emerson gained the early 8-3 over lead over Lasell to open the second frame before the Lasers began to chip away at the Lions five points advantage, coming within two at 10-8. The Lasers defense ran into some trouble and committed three errors to allow the Lions to pull ahead by eight at 17-9. Emerson continued to comfortably hold onto the lead until Lasell pulled within three at 23-20, but went onto seal the second set win on a Guerra kill and Lasers attack error.
The Lions hit a roadblock in the third set and allowed the Lasers to blow open a match-high 13 point cushion at 19-6 as Addington registered three kills. Emerson slowly made their way back into the set and cut Lasell's lead down to single digits at six at 22-15. 15 is all the Lions would put on the board as the Lasers pieced together three consecutive points to lock up the 25-15 set win.
After a rough third set for Emerson, the Lions composed themselves and opened the fourth set with a seven point lead at 14-7 before extending the lead to 10 at 20-10 on a Lasers attack error. The Emerson offense overpowered Lasell as Linzmeyer, Edwards and Augustine all tallied late kills to cruise the Lions to a 25-13 set win and 3-1 match victory.
Both Emerson and Lasell enter tri-match action on Saturday. The Lions travel to Bowdoin for a non-conference tri-match with Bates at 3:00 p.m., while the Lasers will host Framingham State and Emmanuel College for a tri-match with an 11:00 a.m. start.
