Bou Aziz Lifts Men's Soccer To 2-1 Overtime Triumph Over Eastern Nazarene

Box Score

BOSTON, Mass. - After sophomore Tyler Yassky (Nyack, N.Y.) squared the game at 1-all in the 54th minute of the second half, sophomore Paul Bou Aziz (Nice, France) finished the game off with the game-winning header in the 97th minute to propel the Emerson men's soccer team to a 2-1 non-conference overtime win over Eastern Nazarene College at Rotch Field under lights on Wednesday night.

With the win, Emerson improves to 4-7, while Eastern Nazarene slips down to 5-7-2

Sophomore keeper Malachi McDonald (Rockville, Md.) played the first 45 minutes between the pipes and made two saves. Junior Connor Dane (Quincy, Mass.) relieved McDonald in the final 52 minutes and earned his first win of the season with two saves. Senior keeper Jameson McFarland (Jacksonville, Fla.) was tagged with the loss for Eastern Nazarene with nine saves.

Junior Warren Backman (Spring Hill, Fla.) led Emerson with four shots, while senior Elly Buford (Atlanta, Ga.) led Eastern Nazarene with three shots.

Eastern Nazarene got on the board in the 18th minutes of the first half. Sophomore Connor Hudson-Bryant's (Weymouth, Mass.) corner kick landed at the foot of freshman Tim Bortnick (Boscawen, N.H.) on the left side of the box and sent the ball past the diving reach of McDonald to put the Lions up 1-0.

Emerson gained offensive momentum in the later minutes of the half and outshot Eastern Nazarene, 7-4.

In the 54th minute, Emerson joined in on the scoring mix. All alone in the backfield, Yassky collected the ball from behind the yellow line. With no pressure from the Eastern Nazarene defense, Yassky launched the ball over the head of McFarland to square the game at 1-all. After Emerson evened up the score, neither team were able to break the tie for the remainder of the half and the game entered overtime.

Off a corner kick from Backman, the ball found Bou Aziz in a sea of Emerson and Eastern Nazarene defenders in front of the net. Bou Aziz headed the ball into the lower left hand corner past McFarland to lock up the Lions 2-1 overtime win in the 97th minute.

Both Emerson and Eastern Nazarene return to NEWMAC and CCC play on Saturday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. Emerson will travel to Wheaton (Mass.) and Eastern Nazarene will return home to play host to Roger Williams.
