Men's Soccer Falls to Daniel Webster

Box Score

Nashua, NH – Make it two up and two down for the Daniel Webster men's soccer squad.

Powered by a first half strike from newcomer Joseano Tavares (Lawrence, Mass.) and a second half clincher from Marcos Vieira Filho (Pernambuco, Brazil), the host Eagles improved to 2-0 with a 2-0 shutout of Emerson, in a matchup of longtime foes Saturday afternoon at Eagle Field.

The NECC defending champion Eagles, who extended their success against the Lions to 4-1-1 over their last six meetings, also posted their 11th straight victory at home dating back to last season and are off to a 2-0 start for the first time in two years.

Eagle senior Sean Hamilton upped his career shutouts total to 16 with a six-stop performance including four in the second half. DWC outshot the Lions 14-6 overall (12-6 on goal).

Carter Bowers (Gorham, Maine) took the loss in goal for Emerson (0-2), finishing with 10 stops.

Both squads played even through most of the first half combining for just four shots on goal, but Tavares took matters into his own hands inside 10 minutes before the half, pressing up front and forced a quick turnover on an errant Lion defensive pass.

Tavares got a quick jump off the steal, slipped past one defender and drew Bowers out to the right, before deking and potting a soft shot into an open twine with 9:48 to go in the period for his first of the season.

The teams again played tautly in the midfield through the bulk of the second with Emerson's Alex Van Pelt and Clark Jacobson getting off a couple of quality tests for Hamilton, but DWC broke through again and iced it inside 13 minutes remaining.

Michael Ottman (Kennebunkport, Maine) pulled a loose ball off the right side and found Filho sneaking behind the defensive left side where he rifled a short 10-yarder past Bowers for the clincher with 12:52 remaining.

The Lion's next matchup is at home against Newbury College on September 10th at 6:00pm.
