Box Score 2 WORCESTER, Mass.—The Emerson College Softball team busted out the brooms Saturday afternoon in a 7-1, 5-3 sweep of the Clark University Cougars at O'Brien Field.
With the wins, Emerson improves to 14-18 overall and 4-14 in conference play, while Clark falls to 2-24 and 0-16 in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference.
GAME 1: EMERSON 7, CLARK 1
In game one, the teams traded scoreless innings until the Lions were able to put one up on the board with a solo home run to left field by freshman catcher Lyndi McIntyre (2-for-3, HR, two RBIs and two runs scored), her fifth of the season.
Emerson tacked on three more runs in the fifth with two outs on junior centerfielder Amanda Horton's two-RBI single to right field, scoring senior Annie Jenkins and junior pitcher Samantha Corey.
With runners on first and third and two outs, Horton managed to get in a rundown to draw a throw down to second in time to score sophomore right fielder Antonia DePace to push across the third run of the inning, giving the Lions a 4-0 lead.
The Cougars broke up the shut out with a run of their own in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI groundout to second base by Leah Bodin.
Emerson rounded out the scoring in the game by adding another run in the sixth on an error and two insurance runs in the seventh (RBI singles by both Jackie DeFusco and McInyre), to secure the 7-1 victory.
Junior pitcher Samantha Corey earned the win, tossing five innings of four-hit ball and allowed just one run as she struck out four.
Freshman pitcher Alexis Ellis-Alvarez came on in the sixth and was perfect in the circle as she retired the Cougars in order in her six outs of work.
Senior Hayley Buckheit suffered the loss for Clark. She gave up five runs (four earned) on five hits in five innings pitched.
GAME 2: EMERSON 5, CLARK 3
In game two, the Lions tallied just four hits to Clark's eight, with two coming off the bat of freshman catcher Lyndi McIntyre.
McIntyre was Emerson's top hitter on the day, going 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and one run scored in the second game.
Emerson began the game by plating two runs in the top of the first on an RBI single by freshman shortstop Jackie DeFusco to score junior centerfielder Amanda Horton.
Sophomore Antonia DePace came home on a wild pitch to give the Lions an early lead, 2-0.
The Cougars answered in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly to center by junior third baseman Rachel Kraytenberg, the younger sister of Lions' assistant coach Emily Kraytenberg.
Clark tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth on senior Annmarie Fransen's RBI single to left field.
Emerson fought back in the top of the fifth with three runs as McIntyre smashed a ball with one out to deep left field to score Horton and DePace.
Freshman third baseman Jillian Gearin sent a sacrifice fly to center to plate McIntyre with the Lions' third run of the fifth, bringing the score to 5-2 in Emerson's favor.
Freshman pitcher Casey Tsamis (4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K) gave the Lions a solid four-inning outing in the circle before giving way to Sam Corey to start the fifth (4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K).
With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, the Cougars drew a walk, singled and singled again to drive in Hayley Buckheit.
Alexis Ellis-Alvarez was able to come into the game to relieve Samantha Corey and induce a pop-up to shortstop to end the threat and give Emerson a 5-3 victory and complete the sweep.
Freshman pitcher Sami West was charged with the complete-game loss as she allowed five runs (two earned) on four hits, walked two and struck out six for the Cougars in the defeat.
With the victories, Emerson's season appears to be finished, unless the team picks up a non-conference game sometime next week.
The Lions doubled their conference win total from a year ago and look to build for the future, as the team bids farewell to senior Annie Jenkins, but will return all other players next year.
