Emerson Softball Falls Short in Wellesley Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WELLESLEY, Mass.-The Emerson College Softball team saw its playoff hopes dwindle with a doubleheader loss (7-0, 3-0) to the Wellesley College Blue on the road at the Wellesley Outdoor Sports Complex on Wednesday afternoon.

With the losses, Emerson snaps a three-game win streak, the team's longest of the season, and falls to 11-16 overall and 2-12 in conference play, while Wellesley improves to 13-9, and 6-5 in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference.

In game one, the Blue jumped out to a fast start, putting up four runs in the bottom of the first on five hits in the inning.

The Lions weren't able to get much going, as the team managed just three singles in the game.

Meanwhile, Wellesley banged out 14 hits, with every starter in the batting order collecting at least one hit.

Junior pitcher Samantha Corey suffered the loss, as she tossed three innings and surrendered four runs on eight hits and struck out one before being relieved by freshman pitcher Casey Tsamis in the fourth.

Emerson's best chance to score came in the sixth with runners on second and third with two outs before a strikeout ended the inning.

Madeline Bianchi earned her eighth win in the circle for the Blue as she scattered three hits and kept the Lions off the board. She walked three and struck out five.

In game two, Wellesley notched two runs in the first inning with an RBI groundout and RBI single, but freshman pitcher Alexis Ellis-Alvarez was able to settle in and keep the Blue at bay for the rest of the game until an RBI double with two outs in the sixth inning added an insurance run.

Ellis-Alvarez took the loss, as she gave up three runs (two earned) on nine hits, walked one and struck out one in six innings of work.

The Lions threatened to score in the fifth and sixth innings, but were unable to push a run across as they were shut out for the fifth time this season.

Julia Warner earned the win in the circle, as she allowed no runs on three hits, walked none and struck out three.

In the twin bill, Wellesley out-hit the Lions 23 to six.

Junior centerfielder Amanda Horton went 2-for-6 for the Lions on the day and nabbed her 11th and 12th stolen bases on the year.

Emerson will look to wake the bats up with a 6:00 p.m. non-conference game Thursday, April 16th against Wheelock College at Rotch Field.
