BOSTON—It was a tough day all around as the Emerson College Softball team dropped a pair of games (10-2, 7-2) to the visiting Springfield College Pride Saturday afternoon at Rotch Field.
With the losses, Emerson drops to 5-8 overall and 0-4 in conference play, while Springfield improves to 4-8 and 2-0 in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference.
In game one, the Lions pounced out to a 2-0 lead after one inning of play.
Freshman shortstop Jackie DeFusco went 2-for-3 and scored one run for the Lions. Freshman third baseman Lyndi McIntyre drove in DeFusco with an RBI single to center, which was followed up by an RBI single to center off the bat of freshman left fielder Christina Guessferd for the Lions' two runs in the game.
Springfield knotted it up at 2-apiece in the fourth before busting it open with a five-run fifth inning.
The Pride tacked on three more in the sixth to make it 10 unanswered runs as Springfield downed Emerson 10-2 in six innings.
Junior pitcher Samantha Corey was tagged with the loss as she surrendered seven runs (four earned) on eight hits, walked two and struck out two in 4 1/3 innings of work.
Sophomore hurler Camdyn Morgillo went the distance (six innings) for Springfield as she gave up two runs on four hits, struck out one and issued four walks to earn the win.
Junior third baseman Melissa Nelson had herself a day, as she went 4-for-5 with a double and three RBI in the first game.
In game two of the twinbill, it was 1-1 after the first inning, but a five-run second inning did the major damage as Springfield came away with a 7-2 victory.
Freshman third baseman Lyndi McIntyre paced the Lions with a 2-for-3 effort (one double) at the dish as she smacked an RBI single to center in the bottom of the first to score freshman catcher Allie Martinez.
Freshman shortstop Jacqueline DeFusco was 1-for-3 with an RBI double to center to plate sophomore right fielder Shelby Carney in the fifth inning.
On the day, Springfield out-hit the Lions 28 to nine, as Emerson couldn't quite string the hits together, whereas seven of Springfield's 14 hits in the second game went for doubles.
Freshman pitcher Alexis Ellis-Alvarez was knocked around for seven runs (six earned) on 14 hits, two walks and struck out one in the complete-game loss.
Emerson will close out the March calendar with a home doubleheader against Fisher College on Tuesday, March 31st. First pitch is set for 5:00 p.m. at Rotch Field.
