Emerson Softball Drops Opening Doubleheader to Wheaton College

BOSTON—The Emerson College Softball team suffered a doubleheader sweep to open conference play (6-1, 10-1) at the hands of the Wheaton College Lyons Friday afternoon at Rotch Field.

With the losses, Emerson falls to 5-6 overall and 0-2 in conference play, while Wheaton moves to 9-3 and 2-0 in the NEWMAC.
Freshman third baseman Lyndi McIntyre was the lone bright spot for the Lions, as she blasted two solo home runs, one in each game.

It was a cloudy day with no wind, but the long ball was flying off the bats of Wheaton College, as the team slammed six home runs on the day.

In game one, Emerson trailed 1-0 until McIntyre sent a ball sailing just over the left field fence for her first collegiate home run to tie the game up in the top of the fourth inning.

But, momentum would shift back in Wheaton's favor as the Lyons tacked on three more runs in the fourth and two insurance runs in the later innings.

Junior pitcher Samantha Corey (2-4) gave up six runs (all earned) on eight hits, walked one and struck out three in six innings of work for Emerson.

Senior Emily Berardi allowed just three hits and one run, as she fanned 15 batters in a complete-game effort.
In game two, Wheaton jumped out to an early lead with three runs after one inning of play and tacked on four more in the third inning, as well as three in the fourth, to go up 10-0. This put the Lions in danger of being run-ruled.
McIntyre's home run ball to deep center in the 5th inning broke up Danielle Cimino's no-hit bid, as the Lions managed just one hit and one run in the game as they fell in five innings.
Wheaton banged out 14 hits, including three home runs.
Freshman pitcher Alexis Ellis-Alvarez was tagged with the loss in 2 1/3 innings of work. She allowed seven runs (all earned) on nine hits and gave up three home runs in the third inning.

The Lions return to action at home Saturday, March 28 when the Springfield Pride come to town for a 3:30/5:30 pm  doubleheader at Rotch Field.
