WORCESTER, Mass.- Freshman guard Eastin Ashby sunk six three-pointers and was good for 22 points off the bench, but it wasn't enough as the visiting Emerson Women's Basketball team fell 62-57 to the WPI Engineers.
With the loss, the Lady Lions drop to 11-11 on the season and 5-8 in the NEWMAC, while WPI improves to 15-7, 8-5 in conference play.
In the first half, Ashby led the floor with 10 points as she connected on 2-of-4 from beyond the arc.
Senior forward Kristin Brice pulled down eight rebounds and chipped in six points in the half.
Emerson took a hard-fought 29-27 lead into the locker room at halftime, but a second half surge by the Engineers was just enough to down the Lady Lions.
Ashby came out from the break and dialed long distance, draining four more three-pointers to give her 12 points in the second half.
Freshman guard Ama Biney stepped up for WPI, making 6-of-8 field goal attempts, good for 13 points in the second half and 17 on the night to lead the Engineers in scoring.
Brice finished the game earning her another double-double (12 points, 10 rebounds), but the Lady Lions fell just short.
The Engineers out-rebounded EC, 43 to 37 with six more offensive rebounds being the difference.
WPI helped their comeback cause by scoring 24 points off 19 Emerson turnovers and got it done down low with 26 points in the paint to Emerson's 10.
Defense in the second half was strong, as more than a few times minutes would go by without either team getting a basket.
The game saw two ties and 10 lead changes, though no lead for either team was by more than 8 points.
With 0:22 on the clock, Brice's layup brought the Lady Lions to within two, trailing 59-57.
This was another close loss for EC, their sixth defeat of the season (third in a row) by 10 points or fewer.
