Box Score Worcester, Mass. – Freshman Jeremy Park (Teaneck, N.J.) found the perfect time to record his first collegiate goal which turned out to be the game-winner as Clark University rallied for a thrilling 3-2 win over Emerson College in New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's soccer action on a frigid Saturday afternoon.
The win for the Cougars improves their overall record to 5-9-1 and they pick up their first conference win of the season (1-5). For the visiting Lions, meanwhile, they fall to 5-11 and 0-6 in conference matches.
Emerson actually got on the board first when Derek Thomson (Concord, N.H.) flicked home a direct kick from Austin Alphonse (Durham, N.H.) in the 21st minute.
Clark answered back less than seven minutes later when TJ Zirkman (Freehold, N.J.) fed Zack Blais (Tiverton, R.I.), who fired a rocket past Carter Bowers (Gorham, Maine) to even the score at 27:58.
The Lions went back in front in the opening moments of the second half when Duncan Bochicchio (Los Angeles, Calif.) buried a rebound off of Thomson's initial shot that was turned aside by Clark keeper Connor Maguire (Dunstable, Mass.).
Once again however, the Cougars responded, as Demetri Boumis (Sleepy Hollow, N.Y.) headed home a ball from Blais at 66:13.
Things stayed that way until Park's heroics led to the Clark win. Boumis found himself at the top of the box on the left side and then split a pair of defenders and found a cutting Park who beat a diving Bowers for the go-ahead goal at 74:52.
Clark controlled the stat sheet, holding a 22-9 edge in shots.
Bowers made nine saves in between the pipes for the Lions, while Maguire made four for the Cougars.
In addition to Park, both Blais and Boumis recorded a goal and an assist.
Each team will play again on Wednesday with Emerson hosting Rivier and Clark visiting Framingham State.
