CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – A well-fought match didn't go the way of the Lions Saturday afternoon as the Emerson Women's Tennis Team fell 8-1 to the visiting Clark Cougars. The Lions are now 0-6 on the year and 0-5 in conference play while Clark moves to 3-7 overall and 1-3 in the NEWMAC.
The day opened up with doubles action where the Cougars jumped out ahead with 8-2 wins in the two and three positions. Number one was a harder point to earn though as Jana Winfield and Theresa Nelson put up a battle against Isabelle Long and Stephanie Gallant. It was down to the wire though with the Cougars just being able to edge the Lions 8-6 to take a 3-0 lead.
Singles action saw Clark take straight set wins in the one, two, three and six spots to clinch the match. Marilia Rosario in the five spot proved to be a worthy opponent for CU's Fiorella Hernandez though as Hernandez was pushed to a tiebreak in the second set, just barely edging Rosario 6-2, 7-5.
The highlight of the day came in the four position though as Theresa Nelson battled back from a 6-1 loss in the first set to take set two 6-4 and rallying up to take a 10-7 tiebreak for the win.
The Lions will return to action this Wednesday as they set to travel to Babson for a 5 p.m. match against the Beavers in Babson Park, Mass.
