SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – The Emerson Women's Tennis Team continued their 2014 campaign Saturday afternoon as they faced Mount Holyoke in a tough 9-0 loss. The Lions are now 0-3 and 0-2 in NEWMAC action while Mount Holyoke improves to 3-2 on the year and 1-1 in the NEWMAC.
In doubles action the Lyons struck first taking a point from a vacated three spot and an 8-1 win in the two spot by Alexa Colas and Michelle Cai over Marilia Rosario and Sarah Brennan Athas. EC's Jana Winfield and Theresa Nelson battled hard in the one spot though, pushing MHC's Sarah Anischik and Amy Chen to the brink with a gritty 8-6 loss.
Singles action saw MHC come out to rip three straight 6-0, 6-0 sweeps in the one through three spots while taking the vacated sixth spot as well to claim the match while Juliet McCarthy battled in the five spot with a 6-0, 6-1 loss to Katherine Schumacher. Rookie Sara Brenna-Athas gave it her all in the four spot though, snaking three games in the first set, but ultimately falling 6-3, 6-0 to Michelle Cai.
Next up, the Lions host Rhode Island College this Tuesday at Harvard with a 4:40 p.m. match time start.
