WINCHESTER, Mass. – Jana Winfield put up an unreal match Saturday afternoon as the Emerson Women's Tennis Team fell 8-1 to the Smith Pioneers in NEWMAC action. The Lions are now 0-8 overall on the year and 0-7 in conference play while Smith improves to 1-5 on the year and 1-5 in the NEWMAC.
Doubles action saw the Pioneers take an early lead with an 8-1 win in the second position and an automatic point in the third. The one position was a tougher battle as Jana Winfield and Theresa Nelson fired up to push Kelli Cheung and Jimin Amanda Lee to the brink with Smith just barely taking the 8-6 win.
Singles action saw the Lions push harder as Smith took wins in the three and six spots to clinch the match though Marilia Rosario took two sets in the five spot while Sarah Brennan-Athas scrapped in a tough 6-2, 6-1 loss.
The highlight of the day came with Jana Winfield firing up in the number one spot against Smith's Kelli Cheung as she ripped off a 6-4 win in set one only to see Cheung rally back for a 6-3 win in set two to knot it. Winfield stayed mentally tough though to battle back in the tie break and take a 10-8 hard-earned win.
The Lions will hit the courts again on Tuesday as they set to host Wellesley in NEWMAC action.
