CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – MIT started defense of its 2012 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference women's tennis title with a strong start to the 2013 this afternoon. The Engineers pitched a 9-0 shutout at NEWMAC newcomer, Emerson College, in the opener for both squads.

MIT was dominant in doubles play, dropping just one game between all three matches. The No. 2 team of junior Michelle Dutt (Gurnee, Ill.) and sophomore Victoria Tam (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.) and the No. 3 duo of freshman Krystal Lai (Irvine, Calif.) and sophomore Sunnie Lampl (Bluemont, Va.) both scored the 8-0 wins to lead the Engineers to an early 3-0 advantage.

Playing at No. 6, Dutt picked up the next point for MIT, scoring a 6-0, 6-0 win over Macy Day. Freshman Wendi Kong (Cupertino, Calif.) won in her first collegiate outing with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Tessy Vetter at No. 5.
