Box Score BOSTON, Mass. – Alyssa Thorne and Jules Augustine combined for 26 kills on the night as the Emerson Women's Volleyball Team battled to a 25-18, 25-27, 17-25, 25-23 and 15-6 thrilling win over NEWMAC opponents, WPI. With the win the Lions are no 10-4 on the year and 2-1 in the NEWMAC while WPI drops to 5-7 overall and 0-3 in conference play.
Set one saw Emerson pace themselves with three Lions putting up two kills each while Brandy Eggermann did work on defense leading EC with five digs. 10 unforced errors and five Emerson aces with two from Heather Park alone gave EC the edge they needed in a 25-18 win.
The Engineers scrapped back in set two though as they battled off 11 tie scores and four lead changes for an extra points win. Jules Augustine was nasty in the set with six kills to her name for a .273 average. The WPI block was the difference maker though as they put up 2.5 to squeeze out a 27-25 win.
Set three saw WPI step up to swing a vicious .458 with Sarah Cook leading the way with four kills and a .667 average that EC couldn't keep up with. For Emerson Kat Rice threw down four kills for a .375 average. In the end WPI's five service aces saw the Engineers roll away with the set 25-17.
Set four was a pure grit that saw the Lions fend off 11 tie scores and five lead changes as Alyssa Thorne lit up for six kills while Julianna Tucker came back onto the floor to lead the Lions with 12 assists. The Lion defense stepped up as well with three blocks in the set with two assists from Alex Lynn and Kat Rice to take a 25-23 win and send it into five.
Set five was all Emerson though as they came out with a vengeance as they took the lead and never looked back. Heather Park did work in the set with six digs to keep EC in it while Julianna Tucker rose up again for six more assists, spreading the offense to keep WPI on their heels as the Lions rolled to a 15-6 win.
The Lions will return to their home court this Saturday as they set to host Springfield in the Alumni Come Home Weekend. Game time is set for noon in Boston at Emerson's Brown-Plofker Gym.
