WATERTOWN, Mass. – The Emerson Women's Tennis Team opened their inaugural NEWMAC season Saturday afternoon as they fell in a tough 6-3 loss to the Mount Holyoke Lyons. With the loss the Lions are now 0-3 on the year and 0-1 in NEWMAC action.
Doubles competition saw the Lyons come out strong in the two and three spots, collecting straight 8-0 sweeps in both to take the lead. Lacey Russell and Savanna Mosser had other thoughts in the one spot though as they took down Emam Malik and AnnElizabeth Konkel 8-4 to cut MHC's lead to 2-1.
The Lyons struck again early in singles as they took wins in the six and five spots 6-0, 6-0 and 6-1, 6-0 to jump up 4-1. Savannah Mosser jumped in next for EC though as she handled Maya Sayarath 6-2, 6-0 to make it 4-2. Lacey Russell helped to make a match of it with a 6-2, 6-2 win in the one spot over AnnElizabeth Konkel to make it 4-3. The Lions couldn't keep the surge going as the three and four spots couldn't hold off MHC, giving the Lyons the 6-3 win.
The Lions hit the road for their next match as they travel to Rhode Island College on Tuesday for a 4 p.m. match in Providence, R.I.
