Box Score 2 BOSTON, Mass. – Some late-game heroics saved the day Sunday as the Emerson Softball Team rallied back to sweep Albertus Magnus 8-6 and 6-5 (9). With the wins Emerson is now 7-7 on the year and 4-0 in conference play as the Falcons fall to 4-8 overall and 0-4 in GNAC action.
Game one sent Lauren Jacaruso out to the circle for EC as the Falcons took to the board first, scoring a solo run in the first and second innings to make it 2-0 after three complete.
The fourth inning saw Emerson break it open though as the Falcons struggled on defense, coughing up three errors. Amanda Horton played the hero though as she crushed a 1-1 pitch to right center for a two-RBI double. Brittany Rochford followed her act with an RBI single of her own before Courtney Fee matched it as well. Closing out the inning and its five runs was Brittany Rochford stealing home to close out the fourth up 5-2.
Albertus came back to answer though in the fifth inning with three runs to tie the game up as they peppered four hits on the Lions to make it five all. EC didn't let the stalemate last long though as they fired back in the fifth inning with three runs of their own again on two outs with Horton adding another RBI before Brittany Rochford put up a two RBI single to make it 8-5.
Albertus scratched another run across in the seventh, but the effort fell short as EC took the 8-6 win with Lauren Jacaruso taking the win and moving to 3-2 on the year.
Game two of the doubleheader would come down to the wire as Alicia Daniele hit the circle to pitch for the Lions where a pitching battle ensued as both teams went scoreless for the first three innings. Albertus broke the tie though in the fourth on a fielder's choice RBI that EC answered in the fifth, taking a run off a throwing error.
It remained 1-1 throughout the rest of the game until it rolled into extra inning which saw Albertus push one across in the eighth that Emerson answered yet again on an error by the Falcons to send it to the ninth.
Albertus scored three runs in the ninth to put Emerson against the wall in a grim situation. With the Albertus pitcher running on fumes, the Lions pounced though as they led off with an RBI double from Alexandra Wysota before a walk and a single loaded the bases. A fielder's choice RBI brought it within one until a costly throwing error gave EC the margin they needed as they brought in two more for the walk-off 6-5 win.
The Lions will continue their GNAC season this Wednesday as they travel to Paxton, Mass to face Anna Maria in a double header. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
