Softball Splits the Bill With JWU

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – A huge seventh inning home run from Nikki Delaney helped give the Emerson Softball Team a split on the day against the JWU Wildcats as EC won 2-1 in Game One before falling 7-5 in the nightcap. Kelsey tuthill pitched the Lions to a win and a loss to move to 10-2 overall as Emerson moves to 18-7 and 12-2 in GNAC action.

Game one was a pitcher's duel that gave the faithful in attendance what they came for as EC ace Kelsey Tuthill took to the circle to take on Taylor Cwalinkski where both hurlers kept it scoreless for three innings before the Lions attacked in the fourth as Alicia Daniele pulled a two-out walk that Nikki Delaney brought on home with a double to make it 1-0 EC.

The Wildcats struck back in the fifth with a hit by pitch leading the inning off before Alyssa Babineau cracked a triple to knot it at one apiece. While Cwalinski needed to be replaced in the fifth inning, Tuthilll went the distance as it looked like extra innings could be looming until Nikki Delaney played the heroine again on the day as the rookie went yard in the seventh inning to make it 2-1 and put it on JWU to step up. The only one who did was Tuthill though as she went out for a perfect seventh to close out the 2-1 win.

Game two saw a little more offensive firepower from both opponents as Alexandra Magistro took the ball for EC while Tayla Gardner represented the Wildcats, this time with JWU rocking some offense early on as they posted a three run first inning after two costly errors by the Lions put them in an early 3-0 hole. The second inning proved detrimental as well with JWU pouncing on Magistro for two more runs off three hits as they took a quick 5-0 lead after two complete.

The Lions had a little bit to say in the fourth with an RBI single up the middle from Alicia Daniele before making a game of it in the fifth knotting it at fives for both after four runs touched home with a two run shot by Kelsey Tuthill highlighting the inning.

With Tuthill coming in to replace Magistro after a complete game before, she couldn't hold off the Wildcats as they struck again with a solo shot in the fifth and sixth inning to pull ahead 7-5 where the score would rest as JWU completed the split on the day.

The Lions will travel to St. Joe's of Connecticut tomorrow afternoon for another GNAC doubleheader.
