Box Score 2 WENHAM, Mass. – After a hard-fought 7-5 win over JWU to advance to the GNAC Finals the Emerson Softball Team found themselves overpowered by the Saint Joseph's of Maine Monks Sunday afternoon as they fell in a 6-2 loss to finish as a finalist for the 2012 GNAC Title. With the win and the loss, the Lions finish the 2012 season with a 32-9 record overall.
In game one, the Lions sent Kelsey Tuthill to the circle to try to keep their playoff picture alive as she threw four shutout innings against the JWU Wildcats before her teammates decided to make a little offensive noise of their own. In a five run fifth inning, the Lions finally put together a little bit of hitting as they put up three hits with RBIs from Brittany Rochford as well as two-RBIs Bianca Buono and Shannon Torosian to put JWU on their heels.
Answering the call in the fifth though were the wily 'Cats who put up four runs of their own off five hits and two errors as JWU nipped at the score 5-4. Ensuring the fans got their moneys worth, JWU knotted the score in the seventh inning with an RBI single which saw Alexandra Magistro come out in relief for the extra innings which ensued.
It would only take until the eighth though before the Lions saw Kelsey Tuthill come out to swing the stick, leading off with an RBI triple before scoring on an RBI bunt single from fellow captain Kendal Peiguss. That was all the Lions would need in the game as Magistro closed out the win to send EC into the GNAC finals.
Stepping up to face Saint Joseph's of Maine in the GNAC Championship match-up, the Lions sent Aleandra Magistro out to the circle to face the Monks, who immediately jumped on the board with a sac fly RBI in the first before tacking on three more in the third off three hits to chase the sophomore hurler from the game and bring in Kelsey Tuthill in relief.
EC showed some life in the fifth inning though as they finally pieced together some offense as a lead-off single and a walk brought up Bianca Buono for another RBI to left center which Shannon Torosian followed up with some hot hitting of her own with a single up the middle to bring in Brittany Rochford and cut it to 4-2.
That was all the offense could muster though as they seemed sapped of energy from the extra inning win over JWU as Tuthill battled in the circle to keep EC in the game, but was touched up in the seventh for two runs off two RBI singles to see the Lions close out with a 7-2 loss.
The loss wraps the Lions 2012 season as they finish second in the GNAC with an overall record of 32-9.
