Box Score 2 STANDISH, Me. – A complete game shutout for Kelsey Tuthill and nine runs scored in an inning alone highlighted the day Friday as the Emerson Softball Team split a doubleheader with a potent Saint Joseph's of Maine squad with a 9-0 (5) win and a 4-0 loss. Kelsey Tuthill collected the win to move to 6-1 on the year while Alicia Daniele took the L to drop to 0-2. Overall the Lions now hold at 12-6 overall and 7-1 in GNAC action.
Game one saw Kelsey Tuthill come out to pitch masterfully as she went the distance with a complete game shut out while striking out nine Monks in the outing and allowing but a mere two hits in the game. The Monks held the deadlock with the Lions until the third inning when Emerson's offense could contain itself no more as Nikki Delaney warmed up the scoring feast EC was about to enjoy with a solo shot off a 1-0 pitch.
Her teammates too it from there as seven more hits and eight more RBIs hit the stat books for the Lions with clutch run-producing hits from Kelsey Tuthill, Alexandra Magistro, Kendal Peiguss, Lauren Jacaruso and Brittany Rochford all gave the Lions something to smile about as they cranked out nine runs in one inning alone to leave the Monks stunned into a vow of silence, which is exactly where Tuthill kept SJC for the duration as they closed out the game early with a 9-0 (5) win.
Game two saw the Monks shake off their offensive sluggishness and hand it off to the Lions though as the third inning came around to make the difference again… this time in Saint Joseph's favor as Alicia Daniele started the game with two solid innings of work, but got touched up by the Monks as they put up three runs on five hits in the inning which saw Alexandra Magistro come in for relief for Emerson.
The pitching change couldn't help the offense though, which seemed so potent in the first game turn around to flatline in the second as the Lions could only muster three hits in the entire game as the held out for the complete game shutout as well with one more run of their own touching home in the fourth to make the final 4-0.
The Lions continue their GNAC season tomorrow as they set to take on the Pine Manor Gators in a doubleheader which has been moved to Rotch Field in Boston with a 6 p.m. start time.
