Men's Soccer Falls In Overtime Heartbreaker

Box Score

BOSTON, Mass. – A heartbreaker awaited the Emerson Men's Soccer team Wednesday night as they opened up their 2011 season with a late goal from Regis sending the match into overtime before another Ranger goal finished the game as the Lions fell 3-2 at Rotch Field in Boston. The Lions open the season with an 0-1 record as they set to face conference foe Lasell this Saturday.

The first half came out with an even tempo for both teams as they both launched as the Lions launched six shots to Regis' three, with the Lions striking first in the eighth minute with Evan Gooden taking a ball from Jon Havens to send a finesse shot past RC's Andrew Lamacchia to take the lead. The Rangers were able to snake one back though in the 14th minute of play after Ricky Guyette laced a deflected ball into the net. The rest of the half remained quiet it headed  to the second knotted at one.

The second half proved to be a bit more physical as Emerson made a strong push at the Rangers, putting eight shots up, Andrew Lamacchia remained on point , making five saves in the outing until the 62nd minute where Jon Havens managed to place a shot into a corner pocket and take the lead 2-1.

It looked to be nearly a done deal in favor of the Lions until a fatal misstep by EC with mere seconds left gave Regis the breakaway they needed as a long ball to Steve Tavares left Noah Price one on one where Tavares placed it in the corner to tie it up as time expired.

The Rangers didn't need much of the first overtime to finalize things though as Rcardo Arguetta saw a clean breakaway only 44 seconds into the OT period where he perfectly placed a long shot into the top left corner of the net just barely over the glove of Noah Price.

The Lions will return to the pitch this weekend as they set to face conference opponent Lasell Saturday in Newton at 2:30 p.m. at Lasell's Taylor Field.
