Volleyball Unstoppable En Route to WNE Tournament Title

Box Score 1 | Box Score 3

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Emerson Women's Volleyball team left no doubt in day two of the Western New England University Tournament as they lit up the boards with Kat Rice and Madeleine Breeland leading the charge with 19 kills apiece on the day . EC topped WNE 3-2 to open the day followed up with a 3-1 win over Westland State before closing it out strong with a 3-0 sweep of Colby-Sawyer to push their record to 5-1 overall on the year and claim the tournament crown. Megan Kaplon was named tournament MVP and Kat Rice took All Tournament Team honors as well.

The first match of the day pitted Emerson versus the host school of Western New England where the Lions came out sluggish, giving the Golden Bears an easy opportunity in set one which they took 25-15. Set two was another story though as a nine point rally helped the Lions demolish WNE in a 25-13 rout to even it. If that wasn't enough the Lions came out with even more fury in the third set as they ripped apart the Golden Bears in a 25-11 set to give them the 2-1 advantage. It wasn't to last with EC's affinity for five as they dropped set four 25-20 to head to their 20th set of the season. EC likes it exciting though as they turned around In the fifth to come back from an early deficit and seven tie scores to rocket to a 15-13 win for their third of the season.

The second match lined up Westfield State against the Lions, who had to shake off a rapid turnaround but looked sharp in doing so, rattling off 10 straight points to open against the Owls with a 25-13 win. Set two the Lions didn't let up on the gas either as Kat Rice's .667 attack percentage pushed EC to a 25-16 win to go up 2-0. The spree couldn't remain forever though as the Owls started to put it together with a red hot third 25-12 set over the Lions to make it 2-1. EC had enough of the five set funhouse though as they stepped up to swing .185 in the set while battling five tie scores and four lead changes to take their first four set win of the season with a 25-20 final.

In the last match of the day the weary Lions took to the court yet again with a tournament crown on the line against Colby-Sawyer and they didn't disappoint from the start as they battled off three tie scores with Jessica Drumright killing three to light up a .375 attack percentage leading EC to a 25-22 win. From that win on the Lions were on-point and unstoppable, taking set two 25-18 and getting even stronger in their 12th set of the day blowing the doors off in the third set with a 25-8 final to take the tournament crown.

The Lions return to the court this week for their home opener this Wednesday against Amherst at 7 p.m. in Boston, Mass. at the Brown-Pfloker Gym.
