Box Score BOSTON, Mass. – An all-around team effort with three Lions in double-digits for points and Olivia Connors tearing the roof down with 14 rebounds gave the Emerson Lions their third consecutive win Saturday afternoon as Emerson kicked-off their annual Tip-Off Tournament. The Lions topped MIT 66-48 at EC's Brown-Plofker Gym to move to 3-0 on the season as the Engineers fall to 1-1 in the young 2011-2012 season.
The first half saw the Lions come out pacing the offense and testing the waters against the Engineers as junior Shannon Norton led the assault, with six points from the floor, a three and a free throw to lead EC with eight. Olivia Connors was nasty under the hoop as well, gobbling up seven rebounds for the Lions as scrappy freshman Kristin Brice pulled in three of her own.
Brice was also aggressive in taking to the basket as she was sent to the line twice to go a perfect four-for-four while putting in a field goal as well to pull in with six at the half. MIT stayed in the hunt with Rachel Hunt and Lauren Sascha Burton putting up six of their own, but Emerson went into the break up 31-25.
The second half is when the Lions came to shine though as they must have sprung for a long distance plan as they were dialing from out deep, shooting a nasty 66% from beyond the arc for 12 points. Freshman Catherine Cloutier cut her teeth as well in the second half as she powered to the board for seven points and eight boards to lead the Lions. Connons again proved why she's a household name as she was good for seven boards while showing some passing skills with five dimes.
With nearly every Lion entering the game putting up points the Engineers were helpless in the melee Even with Tamara Pena leading the squad with six points as the Lions rolled to a perfect 3-0 on the season.
Emerson will now play at approximately 3 p.m. tomorrow in the Championship Game against Connecticut College with tip-off time at 3 p.m. in Boston at Emerson's Brown-Plofker Gym and will be aired live on ESN. The consolation game of Albany College and MIT will start at 1 p.m.
