Women's Tennis Pull Out A Nailbiting Win In GNAC Semifinals for a Chance at the Title

DORCHESTER, Mass. – A down-to-the-wire nailbiter awaited the Emerson Women's Tennis Team who emerged with a huge 5-4 win Saturday night over Emmanuel to advance to the GNAC Championship match set for tomorrow against Simmons.

In doubles play, the Lions started off strong as they saw the number one duo of Lacey Russell and Savannah Mosser improved to 10-2 on the year and perfect 9-0 in conference action as they routed Taylor Dey and Jenny Konecnki 8-1 to draw the first blood while Gina Veramo and Alanna Grady got the job done at court three with an 8-5 win over Jenni Hewes and Jenna Reid. The Saints were able to snag the third doubles point with Alex Hadlock and Amanda Woznicki taking an 8-4 win.

With the Lions up 2-1 they held the advantage but not for long as EC struck first in singles with a nasty 6-0, 6-1 win in the two spot, but Emmanuel struck back with a win in the six spot and then again in the fifth spot. The Lions weren't going out quietly though with Lacey Russell striking next in the number one spot with a gritty match that saw her light up a 6-0 opening set, but Taylor Day showed some icy calmness in the next set to pull it even with a 7-5 win to push it to three. Russell handled the pressure like a pro in the third to take a 6-1 win.

With the score knotted at four apiece and the tension spiking it came down to Alicia Pellegrin and Jenna Reid in the three spot. With all eyes on them Alicia took a sweating bullets 6-6 (7-5) win in the first set. With both players aware of what was riding on the next set and both teams sitting aside them to cheer them on, Pellegrin played the heroine of the day to win 6-4 and send Emerson to the GNAC Championship match.

The Lions return for a chance to win it all tomorrow afternoon as they set to take on Simmons in the GNAC Championship Match at 1 p.m. at the Windsor School Tennis Course in Boston.
