Men's Soccer Unable to Keep Pace With UMass Boston in 5-0 Loss

Box Score

BOSTON, Mass. – An offensive showcase by UMASS-Boston stopped the Emerson Men's Soccer Team in the tracks Wednesday afternoon as the Beacons smattered 24 shots on the match with five finding the back of the net. The Lions couldn't retaliate as they could only get off five shots of their own, falling 5-0 on the day. The Lions are now 7-7 on the year while UMASS Boston improve to 8-4 overall.

The first half just saw pure offensive dominance as they went to town with 17 shots with six of them on goal putting Noah Price to work. The Lions held the Beacons at bay until the 24th minute when a freekick cost EC as Victor Hugo Costa put it in to make it 1-0. Only two minutes later Brian Sanz added another one to the tally with a shot to the far post to make it 2-0.

The 30th minute also boded ominously with Costa striking again with another one into the far post. A hat trick was in the works for Costa though as the 38th minute put a one-touch over the Price to make it a rough 4-0 after 45 complete.

The second half saw the Beacons pull back on the throttle as they only put seven shots up this time around with the game remaining 4-0 until the 82nd minute when UMB put one last one in the night as Dan Purchia scored his fourth of the season playing the far post again to bring it to the 5-0 final.

The Lions are back in play this weekend as they set to host Johnson and Wales in GNAC action Saturday at 1 p.m. in Boston at Rotch Field.
