CAMBRIDGE, MASS. – The Emerson College women's tennis team swept away the double matches and four singles matches to power past Suffolk College, 7-2 Monday afternoon. The win pushes EC to 6-4 overall and 6-1 in conference action.

The Lions jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the match after strong doubles play from all top three tandems. Sophomore Lacey Russell teamed up with sophomore Savannah Mosser to cruise to an 8-1 win over Kelly Conrad and Erica Leblanc in #1 doubles action.

Alicia Pellegrin and Natalie Nicholas teamed up for another solid W, as they downed Rebecca Copeland and Adrianna Garrett , 8-2 in #2 doubles. The Rams made a valiant effort in the three spot as Elizabeth Arkins and Stacy Politis gave Alanna Grady and captain Gina Varamo some hell sending the match to tiebreak but ultimately the wily Lions prevailed to complete the sweep, 9-8 (7-2).

Russell and Mosser stepped up in singles as well to quickly put the Lions on top, 5-0, after notching singles victories over Conrad and Copland as the sophomores registered 6-3, 6-0 and 6-1, 6-0 victories while both moving to 8-2 overall on the season.

Even with the match decided, the Rams tried to fight back into the match as Alicia Pellegrin and Jana Winfield put up some scrappy sets, but ultimately fell in straight sets to push it to 5-2 with two singles matches remaining.

The matches belonged to the Lions though as Natalie Nicholas pounded out a 6-2, 6-0 win over Adrianna Garrett while teammate Alanna Grady saw a formidable foe in Elizabeth Arkins but proved to be the better as she finished the day for Emerson with a 6-4, 6-3 straight sets win.

The Emerson Lions continue their stellar 2011 campaign this Wednesday at Rhode Island College for a 3:30 p.m. start time.
