WPI Sweeps Softball

Engineers win game one 8-0 in five before taking nightcap 11-2 in six

WORCESTER, Mass. (April 4, 2026) – Worcester Polytechnic Institute remained perfect on the season with a doubleheader sweep of Emerson College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) softball action on Rooftop Field Complex this afternoon. WPI posted an 8-0 win in five innings in game one before taking the nightcap 11-2 in six innings.

Game 1: WPI 8, Emerson 0 (5 innings)

Senior Emma Nagy went 3-for-3 at the plate to power WPI with a double, home run and five RBI. Junior Naomi Boldebuck scattered three hits over five shutout innings in the pitching circle to earn the win (7-0) for the Engineers with three strikeouts and no walks. Senior Meg Sherwood chipped in with a pair of hits and two runs scored.

Sophomores Kari Sorensen and Riley Fasteau and first year Malena Cardinale were all 1-for-2 at the plate for Emerson. Junior Cal Sheehan took the loss in the circle, allowing seven runs, four earned, on nine hits with a strikeout and no walks over 4.1 innings for the Lions.

Junior Riley O'Brien posted an RBI double and then junior Sandy Fairbairn followed with an RBI triple to open the scoring for WPI. Nagy added an RBI single down the leftfield line to give the Engineers a 3-0 lead. Nagy then capped a five run fifth for the Engineers with a grand slam to end the opening game.

Game 2: WPI 11, Emerson 2 (6 innings)

Emma Nagy followed up game one by hitting 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles, two RBI and two runs scored, while Riley O'Brien batted 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI as WPI broke game two open with nine runs over the fifth and sixth innings. Freshman Abby Merchant earned the win in the circle for the Engineers (10-0), yielding two earned runs on six hits with four strikeouts and a walk in six innings.

Malena Cardinale batted 2-for-3 with a stolen base and run scored for Emerson, while Kari Sorensen finished 1-for-2 with an RBI.

WPI scored single runs in the second and third innings with RBI singles from freshman Ali Chalovich and senior Meg Sherwood. The Engineers grabbed control with a five-run fifth highlighted by a two-run double from Nagy.

Emerson got on the scoreboard with a pair after loading the bases with none out in the sixth. Sorensen delivered an RBI single through the left side that scored Cardinale who had reached with an infield single and then junior Riley Caiazza scored on a sacrifice fly by Cal Sheehan after following the Cardinale hit with a single through the left side. WPI escaped the jam with a double play and then walked off its second win of the day with a two-run homer to left from O'Brien to cap a four-run home half of the sixth.

Emerson (3-13, 1-5 NEWMAC) returns to action on Thursday when it visits UMass Boston for a non-conference doubleheader at 3 p.m. The Lions return home to host Babson College for a NEWMAC doubleheader next Saturday, April 11, at 1 p.m. WPI (18-0, 6-0 NEWMAC) visits Brandeis University on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
