Men's Tennis Battles Past Coast Guard, 6-1

Nocchi and Leung lead five double winners for Lions

NEW LONDON, Conn. (March 29, 2026) – Emerson College fought back from a set down in three singles matches to secure a 6-1 victory over the United State Coast Guard in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's tennis match at Roland Hall this afternoon.

Highlights

  • Junior Filippo Nocchi and sophomore Connor Leung once again led the way for Emerson as double winners, taking No. 1 doubles by a break and then both rallying from dropping first set tiebreakers to clinch three set singles wins.
  • First years Adam Alireza, Caiden Riebold and Tai Finestone were also double winners for the Lions.
  • Junior Noah Reice earned a point for Coast Guard with his win at No. 6 singles.

How It Happened

  • Emerson put the first point on the board by sweeping the three doubles matches. Alireza and Reibold clinched with their 6-3 win at No. 3 doubles after Finestone and sophomore Cameron McAllister won 6-2 at No. 2.
  • While Riebold and Finestone both won their matches at No. 4 and No. 5 singles, respectively, in straight sets to pull the Lions closer to the win, Coast Guard won the first set in each of the top three singles flights.
  • Nocchi and Leung both dropped the first set in tiebreakers (7-4) at No. 1 and No. 2 singles but rallied to win their matches. Leung powered through the second and third sets against sophomore Anthony Gregoire 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 singles, while Nocchi battled past junior Ben Bonetto 6-4, 6-3 at No. 1.
  • Alireza did not win a game in dropping the first set against senior Brendan Love at No. 3 singles, before rallying to take the second and third sets 6-1, 6-2.

Coach's Corner
"Today is one of the toughest and grittiest wins I've ever been a part of," said Emerson head coach Burke Paxton. "We had quite a number of obstacles before the match even started and I am so proud of the fight the men gave today. I hope we can keep building on this."
